Do the Electors of the Electoral College have to vote the way they are told?

The short answer is No. The Electoral College was designed to have a small group of responsible citizens examine the President Elect and determine if he is worthy of the office. There may be a fine levied if they do not vote as they are told, but those fines have never actually come to pass in the past. That is why our letter writing campaign is so valuable. These electors are living, breathing humans, with hearts, minds, family, friends and communities. They need to hear from the people. That is where we come in.
There is a longer answer in an article on this site entitled “On Faithless, but democratically faithful, Electors.”
